QS202 – Squadron Commander Trouble Shooting guide
Users may experience problems during the setup, calibration and / or programming of the QS202, here are a few tips in Q and A form for you to overcome these. If you have a problem, which is not included on this guide, then please get in touch with us regarding the matter and we will be happy to assist.
Q. My computer crashes when I try to enter the programming mode of the CM software: when I press the PROG and NORMAL keys simultaneously.
A. There could be a variety of reasons for why this could be. Below is a list of common problems:
1. Make sure the connectors are plugged in correctly, the two adapters (the female PS/2 or DIN and the male PS/2 or DIN) should not be connected together, this is a mistake many people make while connecting the QS202 to the computer. The joystick adapter should be plugged into the joystick port, while the male DIN or PS/2 type connector (the connector, which is identical to that of the connector of your keyboard,) should be plugged into the computer where you just removed the keyboard from. The keyboard's connector should plugged into the appropriate plug on the remaining free connector. THE TWO T-BAR CONNECTORS SHOULD NOT BE CONNECTED TOGETHER.
2.Since the Cockpit Manager is not a Windows based program it should not be run in Windows multi-tasking environment i.e. do not have MS Windows loaded while you run the CM software, this may cause erratic results and may also make your system to lock up or crash. Running at the Dos prompt from within Windows is still not sufficient. You must be in REAL Dos mode. To exit to REAL Dos mode, from Windows 3.xx just exit as normal (either by pressing ALT + F4, or FILE then EXIT from the menu bar). From Windows 95, exit by going to the START button, and selecting SHUT DOWN, and then select ‘Restart computer in MS-Dos Mode’.
Once you are in Ms-Dos mode, you need to type the following at the prompt (which will be either ‘C:\>’ or ‘C:\WINDOWS>’) to run the Cockpit manager software:
CD \ <Then the ENTER key>
CD CM <Then the ENTER key>
CM <Then the ENTER key>
This will load up the Cockpit Manager software in Real Dos mode.
3. There may be a software driver loaded which in conflicting with the CM software, try clean booting, by pressing F5 when the 'Starting Ms Dos' message appears. Or when the Starting 'Windows 95' message appears press F8 then '6' for MS Dos prompt only bypassing the config.sys and autoexec.bat. Another way of going about this is using a floppy to clean boot (By formatting a blank disk with the command ‘FORMAT A: /S’ and then booting from it)
4. The source of the problem could also be the software version of the CM software. Some versions of this software have been known to be incompatible with certain machines. The best way in which to overcome this problem is to obtain the latest version of the Cockpit Manager software, which currently is V1.6. This version has been specifically designed to resolve this problem. This can be obtained from the Internet at the Quickshot homepage (http://www.quickshot.com), or directly from us. Because each version of the CM software is different, we have compiled a disk containing three of the different versions, 9607, 9608 and V1.6, one of which should work on your particular machine. If you would like a copy of this disk, get in touch with us and we will be more than happy to send you this disk.
5.There may also be a hardware conflict, if you know how, try disabling or removing some or all of the other cards in the machine. Also make sure that the actual joystick game card is functioning correctly. If possible try out some other joysticks to check this. There may be a possibility that the game card or game port is either not enabled or is faulty. You may want to try out the joystick on a friend’s machine, if there is no problem with it on the friends computer then there must be a hardware conflict of some sort on your machine. We have found that some motherboards posses a keyboard interface bios chipset which is incompatible with the QS202. These keyboard interface bios chips cannot be put into a state in which to program the QS202 and thus the QS202 is incompatible with this type of machine. In such a case what will happen is the computer locks up as soon as it is started, I.e. at bootup, then the problem cannot be resolved and the QS202 is incompatible with this machine.
Q.I get the error ‘Keyboard Error’ when I boot up my machine, how do I get around this?
Q. My machine locks up when I move the mouse in the CM software.
A.This will only happen in the very early versions of the software. Any computer, which
used a PS/2 type mouse, would lock up if the mouse is moved while in the CM software. In the later versions of the CM software, mouse usage had been disabled to get around the problem. The latest version of CM (V1.6) has been specifically designed to combat this problem. You are able to use the mouse as normal in this version. If you would like to obtain this version then get in touch with us
Q. My keyboard locks up when I exit the CM software.
A. If your keyboard has no response right after you exit out of CM; the most likely reason is the version of the CM software. You may need to obtain Version 1.6 of the Cockpit Manager software.
Q. Why are the fire buttons not responding when trying to calibrate the joystick?
A. The reason to this is that you probably have the ‘FIREBTNS’ light turned on. The light means that you have programmed the buttons to replicate other keys, and thus will not act as normal fire buttons. To enable normal operation of the fire buttons make sure it is off. You can do this by using the Mode Change function in CM (button B).
Q. Why is the joystick giving erratic results when I try to calibrate it?
A. As in the reason above, it is most likely because you have programmed the stick part of the joystick. It is not necessary to program movements into the stick itself. E.g. UP arrow when you move the joystick UP etc. This is only required by games, which do not support joysticks. Make sure the ‘Stick’ light is turned off. You can do this by using the Mode Change function in CM (button B).
Q. Why does my joystick not retain the settings I program into it?
A. This is usually due to a software problem or the joystick being incompatible with your machine. If you believe it to be a software problem then get in touch with us and we will send out the latest version of the CM software.
Q. My Joystick is not being recognised in Windows 95, why is this?
A. Refer to the guide, ‘Setting up QS202 – Squadron Commander for use with Windows 95’.
